China has intensified its calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging Israel to halt its military plans to take control of Gaza City amidst growing international criticism and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed grave concern over Israel’s security cabinet approving a proposal by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the military to “take control” of Gaza City, a move that could lead to a full occupation of the enclave. In a series of statements, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons Lin Jian and Guo Jiakun emphasized that “Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people” and is an “integral part of the Palestinian territory.” They urged Israel to “stop the dangerous move at once” and called for an immediate ceasefire as the only viable solution to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and pave the way for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced on Friday, August 8, that the security cabinet had adopted five principles for ending the war, including disarming Hamas, returning hostages, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip and establishing Israeli security control over the territory. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from the international community.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the plan, stating that it “runs contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice” and undermines the prospects for a two-state solution.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment, calling the escalation “wrong” and urging the Israeli government to reconsider, warning that it would only lead to more bloodshed.
Professor Liu Zhongmin from the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University highlighted the potential legal and humanitarian consequences of such a move. He noted that the proposed military occupation would violate international law, obstruct the two-state solution, and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with local health authorities reporting widespread casualties and international experts warning of impending famine. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that over 320,000 children in Gaza are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands already suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
In response to the crisis, China has reiterated its commitment to working with the international community to ease the humanitarian disaster and promote a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue. Chinese officials have emphasized the importance of implementing the two-state solution and achieving Palestinian independence as the only viable path to resolving the conflict.
China’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Zhai Jun, has been actively engaging with Arab countries to foster greater unity and support for the Palestinian cause. During a meeting with Arab ambassadors in Beijing, Zhai emphasized China’s support for a more prominent role for Arab nations in addressing the Palestinian issue.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned Israel’s plans and called on the international community to intervene urgently. The ministry’s statement underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to prevent further escalation.
In a significant development, several countries, including France, the U.K., Canada and Malta, have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state. This move comes as the Palestinian issue reaches a critical juncture, with nearly 150 countries in the UN already recognizing Palestinian statehood.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, China’s calls for an immediate ceasefire and a comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue reflect a growing international consensus. The international community faces a critical moment in addressing one of the world’s most enduring conflicts, with the potential for a two-state solution hanging in the balance. The urgency of the humanitarian crisis and the need for a sustainable peace agreement have never been more pressing.
