An Israeli lawmaker from the right-wing Likud party has openly called for her country to deploy devastating nuclear weapons as a response to the terrifying attacks of the political and militant organization Hamas that have left about 1,200 Israelis dead.
Revital “Tally” Gotliv posted multiple times on her social media accounts for her country to wipe Gaza off the map using massive weapons for destruction. Though it is believed Israel has possessed a significant nuclear arsenal since the 1960s, the country has never confirmed having these.
In one of her X, formerly Twitter, posts, which were written and posted in Hebrew and have been translated, Gotliv wrote: “Jericho Missile! Jericho Missile! Strategic alert. Before considering the introduction of forces. Doomsday weapon! This is my opinion. May God preserve all our strength.” Gotliv encouraged her country’s army to “shell Gaza mercilessly” as “only an explosion that shakes the Middle East will restore this country’s dignity, strength and security.” She further urged her government to do everything, use doomsday weapons fearlessly against the enemies and deploy “everything in its arsenal.”

She further revealed that the nation has artillery capabilities and the government has actually invested huge budgets in it, adding: “The lives of our soldiers are more important and precious than any person in Gaza. The gloves will be removed.”
Jericho missiles are a general name given to a family of ballistic missiles that were first developed by Israel in the 1960s. The Jericho-1 had a range of 310.6 miles and could carry about a 2,205-pound payload, though it had a 50 percent chance of hitting within a 1,000-meter radius of its target. The second one was a longer-range missile with a length of 15 meters, a diameter of 1.35 meters and the same payload capacity. It had a range between 932 to 2,175 miles. Jericho-3, which is an intermediate-range system, entered service in 2011 and featured improvements over the previous models, with a longer length than Jericho-2 and a larger diameter of 1.56 meters. Reports could not yet confirm if Israel has already deployed Jericho-3 during the ongoing retaliatory offensive against Hamas in Gaza.
Gotliv also said that the Israeli government must respond quickly because Hamas is currently “laughing” at her country and that merely ‘flattening’ a Gazan neighborhood would not be enough; Israel must ‘crush’ all of Gaza, she believes. Her government seemed to be sharing her vengeful thoughts.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom the female lawmaker has previously been extremely critical of despite their shared party membership, immediately declared a state of war right after the terror attacks over the weekend. He also vowed to come back with a mighty revenge on Israel’s attackers. (Related: Netanyahu promises to turn Gaza into “rubble” following Hamas attack – they will pay “unprecedented price.”)
Moreover, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has claimed to have “released all restraints” on the troops and promised to show no mercy in their fight against Hamas. “Hamas wanted a change and it will get one. What was in Gaza will no longer be,” he said, addressing the soldiers near the Gaza fence. “Whoever comes to decapitate [or] murder women, Holocaust survivors — we will eliminate him at the height of our power and without compromise.”
As Gotliv openly called for Israel’s implementation of a catastrophic nuclear counterattack toward Hamas, an expert from an international non-governmental organization warned against the “loose talk.”
Nikolai Sokov, senior fellow at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), told Newsweek that openly talking about nukes has increased due to the war in Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, he noted that the subject is a sensitive one in the Middle Eastern country.
“For Israel, such loose talk is perhaps even more damaging because the country does not even admit it has nuclear weapons, so an indirect confirmation is not good for its image,” Sokov told the news outlet, adding that any potential targets would be too close for Israel to even consider using such weapons without putting its own people at risk. He said, though, that part of it is understandable due to serious security crises, a lack of knowledge about nuclear weapons, visible political positions and more people generally pondering the use of such weapons and the effect on a global scale.
On the other side of the coin, Sokov warned that Gotliv’s calls for escalated measures are nearsighted for two reasons. As any potential targets are in the immediate vicinity, damage to Israel would be considerable. Moreover, the military utility of nuclear weapons is often grossly overestimated, especially by those who have limited or no knowledge of nuclear weapons. “There are, effectively, no targets for nuclear weapons in this war/conflict,” he also said.
