The besieged Palestinian civilians of the Gaza Strip fear that if they aren’t killed by Israel’s indiscriminate and genocidal bombing campaign, they may still end up dying of starvation and thirst.
Since Israel imposed a full siege on the Gaza Strip on Oct. 9, Tel Aviv has cut off food, water, fuel, other energy supplies and other necessities to the region, depriving the more than two million Palestinian residents of Gaza of basic survival goods.
Following the imposition of the blockade, Israel began a relentless bombing campaign, indiscriminately targeting not just suspected militant positions, but also civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals and sanctuaries like schools, churches, mosques and refugee camps, all under unsubstantiated claims that groups like Hamas are using these places as bases and command centers.
Now, after a month of relentless bombings, the fear of being killed by Israeli air strikes has become secondary for the beleaguered Palestinians of the Gaza Strip. Now, they are more worried about taking care of their unavoidable necessity of eating and drinking water.
The region’s resources have been all but exhausted after a month of the blockade and relentless bombings. Generators, especially those used to keep the lights on in hospitals, have run out of fuel. Emergency food supplies are also drying up.
“Yes, I can have a small amount of food to keep me going today, but there’s the constant worry of whether I will have food tomorrow,” said one resident of the Jabalia refugee camp who was interviewed by Middle East Eye.
The Jabalia camp was recently targeted by a series of airstrikes that killed over 200 civilians and wounded nearly 200 more, with the Israeli Defense Forces claiming that the target was a Hamas base located within the refugee camp. The human rights organization Euro-Med Monitor warned that Israel is waging an “extensive war of starvation” against Gaza’s civilian population.
The strip’s few remaining supermarkets have been all but swept clean of products, with videos circulating online showing empty shelves. Stores and bakeries have repeatedly been bombed, and those that have miraculously survived have been forced to shut down due to the lack of resources.
In Deir al-Balah in southern Gaza, refugees have been forced to head to the sea to bathe and wash their clothes due to the lack of running water.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that thanks to the Israeli blockade, between Oct. 21 and Nov. 1, just 26 aid trucks carrying vital water and sanitation supplies were able to enter the Gaza Strip. This is nowhere near the minimum amount necessary for the Strip’s more than two million civilians to survive.
“Even mosques, which had water, have been bombed. Water points and solar panels are all gone due to the bombing, too,” said the resident of Jabalia refugee camp. “If we are not bombed to death, we are going to die of starvation. This is a huge fear. I don’t need to explain how painful that would be.”
“We have no water, no sanitation, no running sewage system,” said Imm Mahmoud, a refugee in a school in Deir al-Balah. “With this lack of basic hygiene, neither the adults nor the children are comfortable.”
