The nation has been watching carefully as the Biden administration and the state of Texas battle over how the influx of illegal immigrants at the state’s border with Mexico is handled, with worries growing that the removal of razor wire erected by Texas to keep illegals out could spark a civil war.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick was recently grilled by Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo about where this is headed on the show Sunday Morning Futures.
She asked: “What is this going to turn into a civil war? I mean, you’ve got the Texas rights versus federal rights, both sides with guns?”
Patrick explained that the state intends to assert its authority in defending Texans, noting: ‘We have a right to defend our citizens. We have a right to defend this country. And we’re just doing the job.”
He added that he considers the influx at the border to be a full-fledged invasion: “It’s a cartel army. You know, the founders never dreamed we’d have a president like this one who would just open the door to everyone.
“And they said, well, invasion if an army came. Well, we’re facing an army. We’re facing an army, but they’re well-armed. They’re well coordinated. Don’t mess with Texas. We’re serious about securing our border.”
He added that they do not want to get drawn into a confrontation with the Biden administration and simply want the federal government to let Texas authorities do their job of protecting citizens.
For its part, the Biden administration continues to insist that Texas is preventing the federal enforcement of immigration laws. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said: “Rather than helping to reduce irregular migration, the State of Texas has only made it harder for frontline personnel to do their jobs and to apply consequences under the law.”
However, a senior Customs and Border Protection official maintains the relationship between the border patrol and Texas is “strong” and that everyone is working together to secure the border.
The official told Fox News they do not intend to cut the wire despite a Supreme Court emergency ruling granting them permission to do so.
“Bottom line: Border Patrol has no plans to remove infrastructure (c-wire) placed by Texas along the border. Our posture remains the same. If we need to access an area for emergency response, we will do so. When that happens, we will coordinate with Texas DPS & TMD,” they said.
The two sides have also been battling over the placement of buoys to deter crossings in the Rio Grande and the state’s occupation of Shelby Park near Eagle Pass.
The growing tensions have even attracted the attention of foreign leaders, with former Russian President and current Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev warning that an “even more disruptive” civil war could break out in Texas amid the country’s “total inability to cope with the migration crisis.”
Medvedev, who currently serves as Russia’s Security Council Deputy Chair, referred to the feud between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the Biden administration on X, writing: “Its governor stopped giving even the slightest damn as to what the White House and its senile old man Biden think, and started to mend barbed wire fences.”
He added that the situation demonstrates how America is becoming less powerful, adding: “This is yet another vivid example of the US hegemony getting weaker, a process that is happening from the inside, and is the result of the Americans’ own actions.”
