Amidst the United States’ ongoing border crisis, Hungary has seen the number of illegal immigrants attempting to enter its borders drop since the completion of its extensive border fencing network.
The number of immigrants entering the U.S. has surpassed three million – more people than in the four least-populated states combined. (Related: INSANE: New “border security bill” secures every border except ours.)
“Both the right and the left mocked [former U.S. President] Donald Trump for building a wall, being deemed ‘racist and unnecessary.’ Trump requested $5.7 billion to go toward this project of building the wall, and everyone put up a fit, leading to a government shutdown in 2019,” wrote Martin Armstrong for Armstrong Economics. “Now, Biden wants to sign a bill of $118.2 billion to fund Ukraine and Israel. How that seems logical still beats me.”
In contrast, Hungary has seen its previously tremendous number of illegal immigrants crossing its border drop since it finished building an extensive network of fences that deterred border crossers. From over 6,000 people a day entering, the numbers are down to about 870 a day on average.
This network of fences is 96 miles long, electrified and topped with razor wire. It is considered a huge step forward for Hungary’s project of preventing the country of less than 10 million people from drowning in a flood of illegals.
“You might not like it, it’s not a nice thing, but … the only way to stop illegal border crossings is [to] first build a fence, man it, equip it and also, in parallel, build up your capabilities in terms of legal confines, legal circumstances to be able to handle what is coming,” said one spokesperson for the Hungarian government.
In 2023, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for European Union financing for border fences, reviving an idea long seen as inadmissible by the bloc that sees illegal immigration as a problem but is unwilling to discuss concrete solutions to it.
Multiple nations – including Hungary, Austria and the Netherlands – are part of a growing choir that have been lobbying the EU’s main executive agencies to deal with the increasing illegal arrivals. The bloc’s border agency reported 330,000 irregular crossings last year, the highest since 2016.
EU states are bitterly split over sharing the task of caring for refugees on their soil, and have for years focused on tightening their external borders to prevent people from arriving through unofficial – and often deadly – routes.
Countries including Poland, Hungary and Slovenia erected border fences to keep refugees and migrants away. But the European Commission, which manages the bloc’s shared budget, has so far refused to pay for such barriers, saying it would run against the bloc’s liberal democratic values and could lead to human rights violations.
In a call ahead of the summit with his Polish, Belgian, Finnish, Maltese and Bulgarian counterparts, Orban called for EU financing for such projects, saying that “fences protect all of Europe.”
Last year Hungarian police detained 1,277 smugglers who tried to ship illegal migrants across the country – up from 455 the year before, police said.
“I believe it is not normal for anyone to come in as they please,” Armstrong wrote. “If governments are trying to protect their people, allowing hundreds of thousands of immigrants into the country at any given time is not the way to do it. It may seem a bit harsh to some to build a wall/fencing, but this is a way to make sure everyone who tries to come in will take the proper steps to make sure they are brought in legally.”
