New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams has aborted a proposed third round of budget cuts, which amount to hundreds of millions of dollars, after reducing spending on illegal immigrants.
The Democrat mayor first unveiled the three-round budget cuts in the fall of last year. Under this plan, all city agencies would have to shave 15 percent of their budget in three months’ time. This would offset an estimated $10 billion cost generated by providing shelter, food, medical care and legal services for the unlawful border crossers flooding the Big Apple.
The first two rounds of budget cuts – five percent each – were enacted in January and February 2024. These affected all but the most essential services such as police and sanitation. Fortunately, the move paid off for the Big Apple as the mayor confirmed that the last round of budget cuts wouldn’t be necessary anymore.
According to Adams, “better-than-expected” tax revenue growth in 2023 resulted in a more positive fiscal outlook for the city. Aside from this, NYC itself implemented extra cuts to the city’s planned spending on illegals. (Related: NYC Mayor Adams: Illegal immigration under Biden has become a NATIONAL CRISIS.)
“If we had to do the third rounds, it will impact garbage pickup; it will impact our services to our older adults; it will impact libraries. You will impact a series of services that you will actually see the difference,” said Adams. He added that the new savings will allow him to roll back other planned budget cuts and lift a hiring freeze.
In November of last year, Adams announced $3.7 billion in budget cuts over four years ending in June 2027. The said budget cuts would freeze future police department recruit classes, slash litter basket pickup services and drastically scale down a popular summer jobs program for teenagers. But with NYC’s improving fiscal situation, Adams appears to be walking back on these budget cuts.
“We can renegotiate contracts [and] we can look at long-term planning,” Adams said. “The emergency still exists, but we’re managing it differently.”
Nevertheless, the NYC mayor said the city is “not yet out of the woods” on the issue of the migrant crisis. He reiterated his call for both federal and state assistance on the issue, saying in a statement: “We still need Albany and Washington, D.C. to play their roles in providing New Yorkers with additional support.”
Since the spring of 2022, the Big Apple has provided shelter and care for more than 178,600 illegals. Approximately 65,000 are still in the city’s case, according to the Epoch Times.
Over the past months, the Adams administration had slowly restored a handful of budget items that were put on the chopping block – ranging from $10 million in funding for community schools, and $80 million to maintain a highly popular summer program for children in kindergarten up to eighth grade.
Calling off the planned budget cuts might help Adams resolve his ongoing legal dispute with the public school teachers’ union, a powerful voting bloc that played an important role in his election two years ago. But for the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which represents more than 110,000 public school employees across NYC’s five boroughs, this wasn’t enough.
The union argued that despite restoring the $10 million for community schools and the $80 million for the summer program, Adams isn’t off the hook yet as he went ahead with budget cuts to the city’s many other programs and services. UFT sued the mayor last December over the roughly $560 million in school budget cuts, claiming that the state law that gives him control of city schools prohibits him from tampering with school funding when local revenues are up.
“The mayor is trying to make it look like he’s doing the right thing,” said UFT President Michael Mugrew. “Truth is, we shouldn’t even be discussing budget cuts – there is no need. So we’re not stopping our lawsuit.”
