An American diplomat was found dead in his room on June 25 at the five-star Hilton hotel in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Ukrainian news outlet Strana reported that “there were no signs of violence on the body.”
The diplomat arrived in Ukraine on June 15. Medical records provided by the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv showed that the man had elevated cholesterol levels. Local police have launched an investigation into the cause and circumstances of the diplomat’s death. No autopsy was performed as the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv took the body.
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, later confirmed the death of the unnamed diplomat in a June 26 press conference. According to him, the deceased was a U.S. government employee “who was under chief of mission authority” at the embassy.
“I hate to even bring this up, but I know sometimes conspiracy theories spin out of control,” said Miller. “It is our understanding that he died of natural causes, and there’s no sign of foul play.”
According to Foreign Policy magazine, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv employs between 100 and 200 diplomats and military personnel. But the embassy is reportedly “overstretched and understaffed” with such a headcount when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine war.
Four unnamed sources told the magazine in March that the State Department was planning to deploy as many as 30 to 40 diplomats to the embassy. The additional manpower would give officials, including U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, more flexibility to travel around the region.
The State Department currently advises Americans not to travel to Ukraine because of the ongoing “active armed conflict.” Its latest travel advisory updated in May 2023 urged those who remain in Ukraine to “exercise caution due to the potential for military attacks, crime, civil unrest, and consult the department’s latest security alerts.”
“The security situation in Ukraine remains unpredictable. There are continued reports of Russian forces and their proxies singling out U.S. citizens in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine for detention, interrogation or harassment because of their nationality,” the advisory continued.
“Although Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine severely restricts the embassy’s access and ability to provide services in these areas, the [department] and the [embassy] continue to remotely provide certain emergency consular services to U.S. citizens … to the extent possible given security conditions.”
Russia Today remarked: “Washington is one of Ukraine’s main backers in the conflict with Russia, supplying Kyiv with billions of dollars in cash, weapons, ammunition and equipment. The U.S. and its allies have insisted that this does not make them a party to the conflict, however, ignoring Moscow’s repeated warnings to the contrary.”
