Illegal immigrants in northern France have celebrated the left-wing Labour Party’s landslide victory in the United Kingdom’s recent general election, with many saying they will use this opportunity to cross the English Channel and enter Britain the “first chance” they get.
This came after newly elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer promised to be more lenient regarding migration, including scrapping the former Rwanda asylum plan and migrant deportation flights. Most immigrants in the Grand-Synthe camp, near Dunkirk, were unaware of the results, but were very happy when told that Rishi Sunak will no longer be the prime minister.
According to 23-year-old Amir, a bean-seller from Kurdistan, migrants had given Starmer a nickname that practically translates as a man who works for refugees or workers.
“We are calling him ‘Party Krekaran’ because we have heard that this guy is really helpful to the refugees,” Amir said.
“It’s really good for us. We were really nervous in our countries to travel all the way here and get sent back. We no longer live in fear of them sending us to Rwanda. I’ve seen a couple of documentaries, and Rwanda is not the best place.”
Asked whether the result would make it more likely for them to make the crossing, Amir said: “Yes of course. I want to cross the U.K. as soon as possible. I was really sure that Rishi Sunak was going to lose.”
A 31-year-old immigrant from Iraq named Halmat Ali paid 3,900 British pounds ($5,000) to a smuggler to assist the crossing to Britain. “I like Labour Government. I will cross at [the] first chance. They give me hope,” Ali said.
Crossings have reportedly resumed as early as Monday, July 8, when comparatively calm conditions at the English Channel allowed groups of people packed tightly in boats and wearing life jackets to be escorted into the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, newly appointed Home Secretary Yvette Cooper launched a Border Security Command designed to clamp down on human smuggling gangs. A spokesman for Starmer told reporters: “We’re getting to work straight away because we know that this summer will be challenging.”
The government is “now focused on the work needed to secure our borders and smash the gangs,” Starmer’s spokesman added.
So far this year, 13,574 immigrants have arrived in the U.K. after crossing the English Channel, based on the latest available Home Office figures.
This is a record for the first six months of a calendar year. It is also 12 percent higher than the number recorded by this time last year (12,119) and up three percent in the same period in 2022 (13,149).
Cooper said establishing the unit was Labour’s priority on immigration as she fielded questions on the future of the Bibby Stockholm barge, which is being used to house asylum seekers in Portland, Dorset.
“We need to clear the Conservatives’ asylum backlog, but the first priority has to be to get the stronger border security in place, and that is why our first step is setting up the new Border Security Command,” Cooper said. She also ordered an investigation into the recent routes, methods and tactics employed by human smugglers across Europe.
