A new report from the United Kingdom found that nearly 1.7 million foreigners living in the country are costing taxpayers an estimated 8.5 billion British pounds ($11.2 billion).
This report comes from the watchdog group the Center for Migration Control. The figures, which represent non-U.K. nationals aged 16 to 64 living in Great Britain, represent an all-time high in the number of migrants currently in the country, surpassing the previous record of 1.63 million foreigners in the U.K. in 2012 and 1.67 million at the beginning of the year.
The said amount does not account for the costs associated with asylum seekers who are often housed in four-star hotels, nor does it include the expenses related to foreign students. Meaning, when additional public spending on health, education, transport, housing and welfare for workless migrants were added, the total cost could rise to as much as 20.3 billion pounds ($26.7 billion) annually.
Furthermore, another report from the London-based research organization the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that the Home Office overspent its budget for asylum, border and visa management by as much as 7.6 billion pounds ($9.9 billion) over the past three years.
These findings suggest that the actual financial burden on British taxpayers could be significantly higher in the coming years.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Robert Bates, the research director of the Center for Migration Control, criticized the current approach of the U.K. government to migration.
“For all the talk of a fiscal ‘black hole’, the Labour Government seems to be missing the glaringly obvious fact that mass migration is causing economic pandemonium,” he said.
“There is no reason for us to continue handing out so many long-term visas when we are currently having to bail out over a million migrants who are already in Britain but not working,” he continued. “This is the very definition of a Ponzi scheme and we will only compound the problem if we do not change course soon. Our elderly are facing a potentially deadly winter as Keir Starmer cancels the lifeline of the winter fuel allowance, but at the same time he is doing nothing to clamp down on workless migrants.”
Conservative Party Member of Parliament Neil O’Brien, who has researched the impact of migration on the British workforce, echoed these sentiments in a statement reacting to the reports.
“This report shows migration policy is literally not working. We need a system where the numbers coming are capped at a much lower level and the system is much more selective,” he said. “No one has a problem with a small number of highly skilled workers coming here but that is not what our current migration rules are delivering and sadly there is no sign of that changing under Keir Starmer.”
However, the U.K. government remains in denial of its lapses despite the data presented to them.
“It is incorrect to apply an average cost to migrants out of work as estimates need to take into account individual circumstances. Most education and welfare costs are not applicable to working-age migrants who are not students,” a U.K. government spokesperson said.
