China has warned its citizens to leave Israel and Lebanon immediately as the threat of a full-scale war between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah looms.
A report from the South China Morning Post indicates that Chinese nationals in Israel and Lebanon have been told to leave due to the border situation becoming “extremely tense.” The Chinese embassies in Tel Aviv and Beirut have issued alerts noting that the intense exchange of artillery, drone and air strikes have deepened Beijing’s fears of an all-out war between the two nations.
“Israeli Channel 13, citing the IDF, reports that the army is ready for a full-scale war in Lebanon to ensure the security of the northern territories,” reported American journalist Michael Yon.
“The situation along the Israeli-Lebanese border is extremely tense, characterized by frequent military confrontations. The security situation in Israel is serious, complex, and volatile,” the embassy warned, advising Chinese nationals in Israel to return to China as quickly as possible or to move to safer areas.
Those choosing to stay were asked to follow local security guidelines and stay away from non-essential travel. They have also been advised to prepare for “missiles, rockets, drones and other types of attacks,” and to seriously consider moving away from northern Israel, where most of the attacks have taken place.
The Chinese mission in the Lebanese capital of Beirut also released a related warning on Monday, Sept. 23, asking Chinese nationals to leave as soon as possible and shun the southern regions near Israel.
China had issued a travel warning for Israel in October last year, days after the Israeli army started bombing Gaza, a Hamas-controlled territory, in retaliation for the Palestinian militant group’s fatal cross-border raid on Oct. 7.
It issued a travel warning for Lebanon in August after clashes on the border with Israel and lethal Israeli air strikes on Beirut targeting the Hezbollah leadership. Cross-border fighting has intensified next to the war in Gaza.
The evacuation notice from the embassy in Tel Aviv comes after six safety warnings released this year.
Sunday’s alert arrived after an exchange of fierce air strikes between Israel and Hezbollah in the wake of the deadly pager and walkie-talkie explosions that rocked Lebanon and Syria in the past week. No less than 37 people, including children, were killed and about 3,000 wounded in the attacks on Sept. 17 and 18.
Some Chinese nationals in Israel remain unfazed and have chosen to remain in the country.
Alice Zhang, a Chinese national who resides near Tel Aviv, stated that her everyday life has remained “totally unaffected,” and most people she knows in central and southern Israel have been going about their lives as usual.
Zhang has resided in Israel for 10 years and is married to an Israeli citizen. She remains hopeful that the potential escalation of the conflict with Hezbollah will die down soon. She further noted that the nearly year-long violence in the Gaza Strip will likely last longer than the conflict in Lebanon.
