Assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson left words “Defend,” “Deny” and “Depose” on bullet casings

The suspected assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson left behind shell casings that had the words “Defend,” “Deny” and “Depose” etched onto them.

Thompson was shot and killed outside of the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan where he was staying around 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, less than two hours before he was due to attend UnitedHealth Group’s – UnitedHealthcare’s parent company – annual investors meeting. Several hours after his murder and a preliminary investigation, the New York Police Department (NYPD) held a press conference confirming that they believed the killing was the targeted work of an assassin and not a random murder.

The next day, NYPD confirmed that the suspect in the killing left behind three shell casings from the bullets he fired at Thompson. The bullet casings reportedly had a message on them. Engraved on the three shells were the words “Defend,” “Deny” and “Depose.”

While the police are still investigating the possible meaning of the message, it should be noted that the words resemble the title of a 2010 book by Rutgers Law School professor emeritus and insurance expert Jay M. Feinman titled, “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”

The phrase “delay, deny, defend” is common in the world of insurance law and is notable as the way some attorneys describe how insurance companies deny services and payment for claims.

The discovery of the message may add evidence to the suggestion that Thompson was targeted due to a denied insurance claim. His wife, Paulette, told NBC News after his assassination that he had been receiving threats, possibly due to denial of coverage.

“There had been some threats,” she said in a statement that was intentionally vague due to the ongoing investigation. “Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”

NYPD releases maskless photo of primary suspect

On Thursday, around a day after Thompson’s assassination, the NYPD released videos of his suspected killer showing him without a mask over his face.

Thompson’s suspected assassin wore a hoodie over his head and a mask over his nose and mouth that successfully prevented CCTV footage from positively identifying him.

The photos the NYPD released were reportedly from the same day and showed the suspect without a mask over his face. The released photos show the suspect wearing similar attire to the gunman in the CCTV footage.

“The full investigative efforts of the NYPD are continuing, and we are asking for the public’s help,” the NYPD said in a statement posted on its social media accounts. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for any information that could lead to the gunman’s arrest and conviction.
