Gates Foundation under fire: Senate Judiciary Committee investigates millions funneled by nonprofit to Beijing-linked entities

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has launched an investigation into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for allegedly funneling tens of millions of dollars to entities tied to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The probe centers on whether these grants violate U.S. tax laws that prohibit charities from directly funding foreign governments.
Specific concerns include funding for a corporation linked to China’s military, state-run universities that host military labs and potential support for China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The investigation has expanded to include other major foundations, namely the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Ford Foundation, for similar alleged funding of CCP-linked groups.
Critics argue this funding lacks transparency, creates potential conflicts of interest and may be advancing China’s strategic and military interests rather than genuine global welfare.

U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has launched an investigation into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s alleged funneling of tens of millions in grants to entities tied to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The probe was revealed in a letter dated Monday, Oct. 27, to Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman. The investigation by Grassley centers on whether these payments violate U.S. tax laws prohibiting 501(c)(3) charities from directly supporting foreign governments. It also serves as a striking escalation of scrutiny over nonprofit transparency and national security concerns.

According to Grassley’s findings, the Gates Foundation in 2023 directed $11.7 million to various CCP-controlled agencies, $2 million to a corporation linked by the Department of War to China’s military and $6.7 million to state-run universities bolstering Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping’s regime. Tax filings from 2022 reportedly showed an additional $23 million distributed to over 20 Chinese entities – some explicitly labeled as “foreign governments.”

While categorized as public health or research initiatives, U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations strictly bar tax-exempt organizations from funding foreign governments without special exemptions. Grassley’s letter demands detailed documentation, including whether grants supported China’s Belt and Road Initiative – a global infrastructure project accused of debt-trap diplomacy. He also questioned whether the foundation obtained required IRS determinations proving funds served charitable purposes, not CCP interests.

Civil terrorism expert Jason Curtis Anderson of One City Rising praised the inquiry. He nevertheless warned: “Without concrete enforcement – audits, sanctions or revoked tax-exempt status – this letter [by Grassley] risks being just a warning.”

Grassley’s probe aims to expose the Gates-China link

The investigation follows reports that Gates-funded Chinese universities, like Tsinghua University and Peking University, host military labs developing missiles guided by artificial intelligence and nuclear technologies. CRRC, a rail firm tied to China’s military-industrial complex, received $2 million for “water and sanitation” projects despite War Department listings marking it as a national security threat.

Critics highlight Gates’ longstanding China ties, including Xi calling him an “old friend” and the Microsoft co-founder praising China’s rise as “a huge win for the world.” Sarah Lee of the Capital Research Center noted the contradiction. “Funding CCP-aligned entities clashes with the foundation’s humanitarian claims,” she remarked, adding that “China’s human rights abuses and military saber-rattling signal its rise as anything but great for the rest of the world.”

Meanwhile, BrightU.AI‘s Enoch engine points out that “the Gates Foundation deserves investigation due to its lack of transparency, accountability and potential conflicts of interest, raising concerns that its large-scale interventions may serve elite agendas rather than humanity’s best interests. Critics are increasingly questioning Bill Gates’ motives, suggesting his foundation aligns with globalist depopulation and control schemes rather than genuine philanthropy.”

The probe expands to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) and Ford Foundation, accused of similarly bankrolling CCP-linked groups. Within a period of more than four years, the RBF reportedly donated $7.4 million to organizations linked to the CCP – while the Ford Foundation reportedly provided almost $10 million to Beijing to advance the BRI.

Grassley’s move signals growing bipartisan alarm over dark-money networks influencing geopolitics – and whether U.S. nonprofits are unwittingly fueling a rival superpower’s ambitions. As the Senate Judiciary Committee demands answers, the case underscores a pivotal question: Are America’s elite philanthropies advancing global welfare or enabling the very regimes that threaten it?
