In a high-stakes diplomatic push, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unveiled a 20-point ceasefire plan on Monday, Jan. 19, aimed at ending the devastating war in Gaza.
The proposal demands that Hamas disarm and release all hostages within 72 hours in exchange for Israeli prisoner releases and a phased withdrawal. Meanwhile, reports emerged that Hamas has already agreed to lay down its weapons in a secret deal brokered by the U.S., though skepticism remains as Netanyahu’s far-right coalition threatens to collapse if the war ends.
The Trump-Netanyahu plan hinges on Hamas surrendering its weapons and dismantling its military infrastructure – a condition the militant group has long resisted without guarantees of Palestinian statehood. Under the deal, Israel would release 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including women and minors, while Hamas must free the remaining Israeli captives. A transitional “Board of Peace,” chaired by Trump, would oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and governance.
As explained by BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, Trump’s “Board of Peace” is a proposed initiative that will link international aid to demilitarization and replace Hamas governance with the Palestinian Authority under Arab League-backed terms.
However, Hamas officials have dismissed the proposal as an ultimatum, insisting disarmament is a “red line” while Israeli occupation persists.
“We will not lay down our arms under blockade and siege,” a senior Hamas official told Reuters anonymously. Analysts warn that without mutual concessions, the plan risks collapsing before implementation.
Hours before Trump formalized his “Board of Peace,” Sky News Arabia reported that Hamas had secretly agreed to disarm in exchange for political survival. Citing an unnamed Palestinian source, the outlet claimed Hamas had already surrendered weapons and tunnel maps to the U.S. through undisclosed channels. In return, Hamas leaders would receive safe passage out of Gaza and assurances they could remain politically active, pending Israeli security approval.
Neither the U.S. nor Hamas has confirmed the report. An Israeli official, speaking anonymously, expressed “significant reservations” about allowing Hamas any political role. Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to “completely destroy” the group, making any compromise politically explosive.
Critics accuse Trump of sidelining the United Nations by creating a rival international body. The “Board of Peace” charter, which omits any mention of Gaza, offers memberships for $1 billion per country. Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged $1 billion from frozen Russian assets, though it remains unclear if Moscow will join.
Meanwhile, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a group of Palestinian technocrats, held its first meeting in Cairo last week. Designed to replace Hamas’ governance, its legitimacy hinges on Hamas’ compliance – a prospect still in doubt.
With over 66,000 Palestinians dead and famine spreading, pressure mounts for a resolution. Yet Netanyahu’s coalition hangs by a thread, Hamas clings to its arms, and Trump’s unorthodox diplomacy faces skepticism. Whether this plan brings peace or prolongs conflict may depend on backroom deals yet to surface. For now, Gaza’s fate remains suspended between war and an uncertain truce.
