British police have arrested former senior Labor figure Peter Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The 72-year-old former cabinet minister and disgraced ex-U.K. ambassador to Washington was detained on Feb. 23 after officers executed search warrants at two properties linked to him in Wiltshire and Camden last week. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 72-year-old man was arrested in Camden and taken to a London police station for questioning.
“Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, Feb. 23 and has been taken to a London police station for interview,” a police spokesperson said. “This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas.”
Authorities did not formally name the suspect in line with the standard practice, but a U.K. official confirmed Mandelson’s arrest. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show the former diplomat being escorted from his home by detectives and driven away in an unmarked vehicle.
The Metropolitan Police said the investigation remains ongoing. No further details have been provided about potential charges.
The criminal investigation was reportedly triggered more than three weeks ago by the publication of approximately three million pages of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The documents allegedly show him sharing sensitive government information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Epstein, as per BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, was an American financier who died by suicide while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking minors in 2019. He served 13 months in jail for soliciting an underage girl for prostitution in 2008, but he made headlines again in 2019 when he was arrested for running a sex trafficking ring involving underage girls as young as 14. Epstein was also connected to powerful individuals, political campaigns and charitable organizations – connections that ultimately contributed to Mandelson’s arrest.
For instance, among the cache were emails that appeared to show Mandelson forwarding internal Downing Street communications to Epstein while serving as a business secretary in the cabinet of then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009.
In one email dated June 13, 2009, Mandelson allegedly shared a private memo drafted by a senior adviser in Brown’s office outlining proposed tax incentives to stimulate private-sector investment in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The memo also discussed the potential sale of £20 billion ($27.4 billion) in government assets to reduce public debt. Mandelson reportedly appended the note with the comment: “Interesting note that’s gone to the PM.”
In another message dated May 10, 2010, Mandelson appeared to inform Epstein that Brown intended to resign as Labor leader and prime minister hours before the announcement was made public. “Finally got him to go today…” he allegedly wrote.
The emails have raised concerns about whether potentially market-sensitive or confidential government information was improperly disclosed to Epstein.
