The Biden campaign reportedly met with supporters of Nikki Haley following her endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
The Daily Beast initially broke the news of the said meeting, which happened virtually on the evening of May 22. Haley supporters from Vermont to Arizona reportedly joined the incumbent Democratic president’s campaign as part of the latter’s ongoing outreach to win over her voters.
“The fact they actually sent someone … to speak to a small group, I think that’s a good signal that they’re aware there are huge numbers of Haley voters out there,” said Robert Schwartz, founder of the Haley Voters For Biden political action committee. He described the meeting as “highly encouraging,” comparing it to other listening sessions the Biden campaign has done with the pro-Palestinian uncommitted vote.
“That’s an important development. The Biden campaign isn’t only investing in digital ads and the traditional media to reach out to Haley voters. But now we’ve been asking them to actually come and talk to them, just like they’ve been talking to uncommitted voters, and listen to what Haley voters are asking for and what their policy priorities are.”
According to Schwartz, the May 22 meeting was a “big deal” and the Biden campaign’s continued outreach is the most encouraging sign for him and other supporters of the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He also expressed optimism that her voters will ultimately join the Biden bandwagon.
“She has a very wide coalition of voters – including some from the center-left, the center and conservatives. And I think among strong conservatives, there are a lot of disagreements about Biden’s policy. While I respectfully disagree with her decision to support Trump, I would also respectfully disagree with her characterization of [President Joe] Biden being catastrophic.”
The May 22 meeting followed Haley’s remarks earlier that day, where she reiterated that she would vote for Trump over Biden. The former governor of the Palmetto State said this during an event at the Washington, D.C.-based conservative think tank Hudson Institute, where she has been serving as its Walter P. Stern chair since April.
“As a voter, I put my priorities on a president who’s going to have the backs of our allies and hold our enemies to account; who would secure the border, no more excuses. A president who would support capitalism and freedom, [and] a president who understands we need less debt – not more debt,” Haley said.
“Trump has not been perfect on these policies – I’ve made that clear, many, many times. But Biden has been a catastrophe. So, I will be voting for Trump.”
“Ever since the GOP primary wrapped up, the Biden [campaign] team has identified Haley voters as a key persuasion target with a unique set of key issues, particularly around Trump’s attacks on democracy and the general notion of restoring decency to the office,” the Daily Beast wrote.
“The Biden campaign has continued trying to refine [its] definition of a persuadable Haley voter over the past few months – focusing on paid media, Haley’s margins in key battleground precincts from the primary and simply listening to [Haley voters’] concerns.”
Biden himself said in March following Haley’s withdrawal from the presidential race: “Trump made it clear he doesn’t want Haley’s supporters. I want to be clear – there is a place for them in my campaign.” The former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations dropped out of the race following the results of Super Tuesday, where Trump emerged the winner in 14 of 15 state primaries.
