Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau has been slammed for partying at a Taylor Swift concert in Ontario province while anti-Israel protests rocked the streets of Montreal, the capital of Quebec province.
According to the Daily Mail, the Canadian leader was spotted Friday, Nov. 22, at the Toronto stop of Swift’s worldwide Eras Tour. “Trudeau was seen without a care enjoying tunes with fellow Swifties,” the tabloid reported. Critics took to social media to blast the PM for his lack of awareness about the situation and his choice to prioritize leisure over duty.
Trudeau’s indifference drew the ire of Canadian Sen. Leo Housakos, who voiced out his disdain on social media. The federal senator for Quebec province posted footage of the riots that rocked the capital of the Francophone province.
“Tonight, while Trudeau is partying it up in Toronto, I was meeting with several members of the Jewish community of Montreal. Meanwhile, this is our hometown tonight,” Housakos captioned his footage.
“The pro-Hamas crowd [was] emboldened by Trudeau’s pledge to arrest the Israeli PM [Benjamin Netanyahu]. Hope you had fun at the concert, though.”
Housakos’ videos showed anarchy gripping Montreal. Rioters in the city’s downtown set cars ablaze and smashed shop windows. Things came to a head when demonstrators burned an effigy of Netanyahu in the middle of the street.
The protest originally began as a gathering in Montreal’s Emilie-Gamelin Park. Still, it quickly turned violent as participants threw metal objects and small explosive devices at police officers sent to maintain order. Smoke bombs filled the air as rioters marched through the streets and damaged property while carrying Palestinian flags.
Riot police from the Montreal City Police Service responded by deploying tear gas and implementing crowd control tactics to restore order. Law enforcement reported three arrests for assault on officers and obstruction of police work.
It was only a day after the concert that Trudeau responded to the anarchy in Montreal. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Canadian PM condemned the violence and antisemitism during the protest. The gathering’s organizers, the groups Divest for Palestine and the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles, did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent on the same day.
“What we saw on the streets of Montreal last night was appalling. Acts of antisemitism, intimidation and violence must be condemned wherever we see them,” Trudeau wrote on X on Saturday.
“The [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] are in communication with local police. There must be consequences, and rioters [must be] held accountable.”
But many Canadians weren’t convinced and took to X to question Trudeau’s leadership and priorities. Following Housakos’ post, Member of Parliament (MP) for Toronto Don Stewart commented on the events that transpired in Quebec’s capital.
“Lawless protesters run roughshod over Montreal in violent protest, [while] the prime minister dances,” he wrote. “This is the Canada built by the Liberal government. Bring back law and order, safe streets and communities in the Canada we once knew and loved.” (Related: Members of Justin Trudeau’s own party sign document calling for his resignation.)
A furious user, meanwhile, told Trudeau to “get [his] priorities straight” instead of “acting the fool.” The user continued: “Cities are burning [because of] rioters; seniors being left out, once again, from your vote buying handouts; children going hungry because of your inflation – I bet not your kids.”
The protests in Montreal followed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas’ military wing Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, was also issued an arrest warrant.
Canada is a signatory of the Rome Statute that established the ICC. Given this, Trudeau said Ottawa would comply with the arrest warrant in the unlikely event Netanyahu visits the country.
