The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are considering putting military boots on the ground in Ukraine – and possibly even nuclear weapons.
Leading NATO nations the United Kingdom and France are determined to send troops to Kyiv to deter any future conquests by Russia and President Vladimir Putin. London and Paris want to make a “core of allies in Europe” as fears increase that President-elect Donald Trump could withdraw military support for Ukraine. America’s allies in Europe are making it clear that they plan to proceed with the war no matter what Trump chooses to do once he is inaugurated again in office – and British and French troops could be among the first European allies deployed to Ukraine to deter any large-scale Russian attacks.
Officially, the talks are only discussing training Ukrainian forces, but this could pave the way for NATO soldiers to, in the near future, be stationed on the frontlines as combat troops.
“Discussions are underway between the U.K. and France regarding defense cooperation, particularly with the aim of creating a core of allies in Europe, focused on Ukraine and broader European security,” said one British military source who spoke with French newspaper Le Monde.
A top NATO military official also warned that Europeans may have to make sacrifices in order to keep supporting Ukraine if Trump decreases or completely pulls out American military aid for the conflict.
This was according to Royal Netherlands Navy Adm. Rob Bauer, chair of the NATO Military Committee, who said in a recent speech that Europe must be prepared to sacrifice some “luxuries” to pay to support Ukraine and prevent a “wartime scenario” coming to Europe, one that the nations of Europe are reportedly not ready for.
Bauer also pressed businesses to be ready to adjust their production and distribution lines for war to be less vulnerable to blackmail from countries like Russia and China.
“If we can make sure that all crucial services and goods can be delivered no matter what, then that is a key part of our deterrence,” said Bauer.
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that the administration of outgoing President Joe Biden has talked about providing nuclear weapons to Ukraine.
The discussion was made under the context of Trump’s desire to withdraw taxpayer-funded military aid and to bring about a quick end to the conflict by enforcing some kind of peace deal.
Several officials within Biden’s government suggested that the president could provide Ukraine with the nuclear weapons that it lost during its independence after the fall of the Soviet Union.
While this would definitely be considered an instant and massive deterrent against Russia, such a step would be severely escalatory and could have grave consequences, and could make the Kremlin even more desperate to end the conflict on its terms.
